Byna, Suren

Biography

Suren Byna is a Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) at The Ohio State University (OSU). He is also a Visiting Faculty Scientist in the Scientific Data Division at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab. Prior to joining OSU, he was Senior Computer Scientist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL). His research interests are in scalable scientific data management, particularly focusing on optimizing parallel storage and I/O performance and on developing systems for managing scientific data. He leads the Exascale Computing Project (ECP) funded ExaHDF5 and ExaIO projects, and Department of Energy (DOE) funded object-centric data management systems (Proactive Data Containers - PDC), and experimental and observational data management (EOD-HDF5) projects. Before his tenure at LBNL, he was a researcher at NEC Labs America, a research assistant professor at Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago, and a guest researcher at Argonne National Laboratory.

Expertise

Prof. Byna's research interests span across many topics in scientific data management and analysis. These topics include parallel I/O, parallel file systems, next-generation data management systems, I/O libraries, file formats, data compression strategies, data movement performance characterization and tuning, performance data visualization, efficient scientific workflows, scientific metadata and provenance management strategies, energy-aware computing, and heterogeneous computing. He's the PI of the USA's Exascale Computing Project (ECP)-funded ExaIO project. He currently leads Department of Energy ASCR-funded projects on object-centric data management systems for next-generation HPC and cloud systems (Proactive Data Containers - PDC) and experimental and observational data management (EOD-HDF5). Software libraries developed by his teams distributed in the HPC-IO GitHub Organization.

Multiple funded positions are open in Prof. Byna's Innovative Data Technologies (IDT) Lab for outstanding Ph.D., Masters, and undergraduate OSU students, who are interested in the areas of Data and metadata management, Storage and I/O, File systems, and Energy optimization in the HPC, Cloud, and Edge computing environments. If interested in performing cutting-edge research and development in these areas, please send your CV and transcript to Prof. Byna by email.
