Nikhita Vedula has been selected to participate in Rising Stars 2019, hosted by the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Rising Stars is an intensive workshop for women graduate students and postdocs who are interested in pursuing academic careers in computer science, computer engineering, and electrical engineering. The workshop will be held from October 29-November 1 at the UIUC campus.

Nikhita Vedula is a PhD candidate in Computer Science and Engineering at the Ohio State University, advised by Professor Srinivasan Parthasarathy. She received her bachelor's degree from the National Institute of Technology, Nagpur, India. Her research interests are at the intersection of data mining, natural language processing and social computing. She has worked as a research intern at Nokia Bell Laboratories Ireland, Adobe Research and Amazon Alexa AI. Her work has been published at top data mining conferences such as the Web Conference (WWW), ICDM and SIGIR. She was nominated as one of the two candidates for a Google PhD fellowship representing Ohio State University in 2018.

Vedula's research seeks to enhance our understanding of the massive quantities of human-generated data by (i) extracting, interpreting and transforming the data into structured knowledge representations; and (ii) modeling the functional intentions and behavioral characteristics of the users or authors of such data.
